De PluX connector volgens NEM658

NEM658, ook wel aangeduid als "PluX", wat de afkorting is van "Plug X". De "X" staat voor het aantal pinnen van de connector, dit kan zijn 8, 12, 16 of 22. Aan de benaming is dus te zien hoeveel pinnen er zijn. "PluX8" heeft 8 pinnen. "PluX12" heeft 12 pinnen. "PluX16" heeft 16 pinnen en "PluX22" heeft 22 pinnen. In de NEM 658 uitgave 2013 komt de "PluX8" niet meer voor. Wellicht dat deze op beurzen e.d. nog wel verkrijgbaar is.

Voor de oriëntatie: bij de "PluX8" en "PluX12" zit pin 7 links-boven, Bij de "PluX16" zit pin 3 links-boven en bij de "PluX22" zit pin 1 links-boven. Pin 11 is de indexpin (het dichte rondje). De connector bestaat uit twee rijen pinnen met een rastermaat van 1,27 mm. Wat opvalt aan de PluX-decoders is, dat anders dan bij de voorgaande normen (zoals o.a. NEM651 en NEM652, waar de pinnen aan de decoderplug zitten), de aansluitpinnen op de (hoofd)print van de loc zitten en dat de gaten waar de pinnen in vallen in de decoder-printconnector zitten.

Verklaring van afkortingen: GPIO = General Purpose Input/Output. F0f (licht aan frontzijde) en F0r (licht aan achterzijde) worden in- of uitgeschakeld d.m.v. functietoets F0.

De pinbezetting van de "PluX" is zodanig gekozen dat de diverse "Plux"-decoders mechanisch uitwisselbaar zijn. Elektrisch zijn er, wanneer er bijvoorbeeld een "PluX8"-decoder in een loc met een "PluX22"-connector geplaatst wordt, er minder pennen verbonden zijn, zoals in bovenstaande tabel te zien is. Daar dan alleen de pennen 7 t/m 14 contact maken, zullen alleen de motor en de front- en achterverlichting werken.

Dummystekker

Bij gebruik zonder decoder moet in de loc of het treinstel een dummystekker (ook: "brugstekker") aanwezig zijn. Pin 8 moet dan met pin 12 doorverbonden zijn, en pin 10 met pin 14.

Vereiste vrije inbouwruimte

In de loc of in het rijtuig dient volgens de NEM-norm een vrije ruimte aanwezig te zijn, waarin de decoder zonder gereedschap geplaatst kan worden. De decoder mag hierbij nergens klem komen te zitten. In onderstaande tabel zijn de afmetingen voor de vereiste vrije ruimte aangegeven, zoals voorgeschreven staat in S-9.1.1.
